Portofino
It appears suddenly, nestled in a hidden cove at the heart of a lush promontory of Mediterranean scrub that cuts through the sea like a blade, dividing the Paradise Gulf from the Gulf of Tigullio.
This is the village of Portofino, world-renowned as one of the most characteristic coastal villages of the Ligurian Riviera.
History and Tradition
The connection with the waves that kiss the rocks and reflect the image of the bell towers has been forever encapsulated in its name since the Romans founded the village, baptizing it Portus Delphini, due to the joyful presence of many dolphins in the crystal-clear waters surrounding this strip of land.
Over the centuries, Portofino’s fortunes remained inextricably linked to those of the Republic of Genoa, until the nascent tourism industry of the late nineteenth century discovered its enchanting beauty. Since then, the famous “piazzetta,” embraced by the warm and colorful Genoese-style buildings, with a sea teeming with gozzi boats and masts that gently wedge between arcades and windows, has been a destination for VIP vacations from around the world every year.
